NSK from Kapital to Capital opening at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid on 28 June 2017

In 2017, the exhibition is traveling to one of the most prominent art museums in the world, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, where it will run from 28 June through 8 January 2018.

Staged at the Moderna galerija in 2015, NSK from Kapital to Capital. Neue Slowenische Kunst – an Event of the Final Decade of Yugoslavia was the first ever survey exhibition of the Neue Slowenische Kunst collective. One of Moderna galerija’s most visited exhibitions, it attracted a lot of interest both at home and abroad. Last year it traveled to the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow where it met with exceptional acclaim, with as many as 70,745 visitors seeing it. Early this year, the renowned New York art blogazine Hyperallergic listed the Moscow exhibition as one of the fifteen best exhibitions of 2016.

In June, the exhibition travels in its entirety to the Spanish museum. Like the Moscow and Ljubljana editions before it, it will present the work of the collective’s three founding groups and five departments. Explaining the reasons for inviting the NSK exhibition to Madrid’s main contemporary art institution, its director Manuel J. Borja – Villel said: “A generally accepted notion of contemporary art is that, regardless of where it occurs, it always draws inspiration from a certain center. The case of NSK, however, proves the opposite, showing how an art movement that becomes extremely important for understanding a period can develop on the periphery.”

On Friday, 30 June 2017 at 7 p.m. Slavoj Žižek, invited by the Museo Reina Sofia, will deliver a lecture on various deaths and resurrections of the phantasm of fascism entitled Lessons from the "apocalypse".

A (shortened) Spanish version of the book NSK from Kapital to Capital. Neue Slowenische Kunst––An Event of the Final Decade of Yugoslavia will accompany the exhibition in Madrid. The book NSK from Kapital to Capital. Neue Slowenische Kunst––An Event of the Final Decade of Yugoslavia, edited by Zdenka Badovinac, Eda Čufer and Anthony Gardner, is one of the four finalists for the prestigious Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award for Smaller Museums, Libraries, Collections, and Exhibitions. Zdenka Badovinac, also the curator of the exhibition, said that “the fact that most of the texts were translated into Spanish further shows the great interest the Museo Reina Sofia has in presenting the complexity of NSK art to the Spanish audience.”
